Most often designed upon windy peaks, castles were basic structures that allowed their inhabitants to spend time and space to offensive and defensive schemes, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings frequently installed in only the most fecund, broad valleys. The barren fortresses did not provide for the peaceful avocation of farming. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is depicted in Berkeley Castle, which is perhaps the most untouched example we have. The keep is thought to date from the time of William the Conqueror. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstruction to attackers trying to excavate under the castle walls. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an aged yew hedge cut into the figure of crude battlements.

The Origins Of Wall Fountains

The amazing or decorative effect of a fountain is just one of the purposes it fulfills, in addition to delivering drinking water and adding a decorative touch to your property.

Pure functionality was the original purpose of fountains.

People in cities, towns and villages received their drinking water, as well as water to bathe and wash, via aqueducts or springs in the vicinity. Used until the nineteenth century, in order for fountains to flow or shoot up into the air, their origin of water such as reservoirs or aqueducts, had to be higher than the water fountain in order to benefit from gravity. Designers thought of fountains as wonderful additions to a living space, however, the fountains also served to supply clean water and celebrate the designer responsible for creating it. The main materials used by the Romans to build their fountains were bronze or stone masks, mostly depicting animals or heroes. To illustrate the gardens of paradise, Muslim and Moorish garden planners of the Middle Ages introduced fountains to their designs. The fountains found in the Gardens of Versailles were meant to show the power over nature held by King Louis XIV of France. Seventeen and 18 century Popes sought to extol their positions by including decorative baroque-style fountains at the point where restored Roman aqueducts arrived into the city.

Since indoor plumbing became the norm of the day for fresh, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely decorative. Gravity was substituted by mechanical pumps in order to enable fountains to bring in clean water and allow for amazing water displays.

Modern fountains are used to adorn community spaces, honor individuals or events, and enhance recreational and entertainment events.

The Newest Addition to the Chatsworth Gardens: Revelation

The popular UK sculptor Angela Conner designed the Chatsworth decorative exterior water feature called “Revelation.” In celebration of the Queen’s 80th birthday, she was mandated by the deceased 11th Duke of Devonshire to create a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth made of brass and steel in 2004. One of Chatsworth’s first ponds, Jack Pond, had “Revelation” mounted in it in 1999. The four large steel flower petals open and close with the flow of water, alternatively camouflaging and showing a gold colored globe at the sculpture’s heart. Standing five meters high and five meters wide, the globe was built from steel and then painted with gold dust. This latest water fountain is an intriguing and interesting addition to the Chatsworth Gardens, unique in that the movement of the petals is completely powered by water.
