Water-raising System by Camillo Agrippa

Although the machine made by Agrippa for moving water gained the admiration of Andrea Bacci in 1588, it appeared to disappear not long thereafter. Merely years later, in 1592, the early modern Roman conduit, the Acqua Felice, was attached to the Medici’s villa, possibly making the device obsolete. This is all the more tragic given how spectacular Camillo Agrippa’s device was, completely distinctive in Italy during the hundreds of years that passed between the fall of ancient Rome and the contemporary era. 434_ht__12842.jpg There may have been some other spectacular water-related works in Renaissance landscapes in the later part of the sixteenth century, such as water fountains that played tunes, water caprices (or giochi d’acqua) and also scenographic water demonstrations, but nothing was motorized by water which defied gravitation.

The Newest Addition to the Chatsworth Gardens: Revelation

The popular British sculptor Angela Conner designed the Chatsworth decorative outdoor water feature called “Revelation.” She was mandated by the now deceased 11th Duke of Devonshire to make a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth, in 2004/5 in commemoration of the Queen’s 80th birthday. In 1999 Revelation was installed in Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s oldest ponds. It takes on the shape of four large petals made of metal which open and closes with the water flow, alternatively concealing and displaying a golden globe at the sculpture’s heart. Standing five meters high and five meters wide, the globe was made from steel and then coated with gold dust. This newest water feature is an exciting and interesting improvement to the Gardens of Chatsworth, because the movement of flower petals is completely powered by water.

Feline-Friendly Water Features

Does hearing water flow from the faucet make your cat come running? Does he test the water in his bowl with his paw or drink from the toilet? Cats do not like to consume water that is not moving, and this behavior demonstrates this. They are not driven to look for water much at all.

Untamed cats get enough moisture from the meat they eat.

Consequently, felines do not have a natural desire for much water. That said, household cats do in fact need extra water, so it is up to you to provide it. Make water easily attainable to your cat by installing a cat fountain.

If you put one in, you can rest easy knowing your cat has easy access to water. Fountains come in various shapes and sizes, so be certain to choose one that best fits the needs of your cat. One type of fountain has continually circulating water for maximum freshness whereas others have water which is automatically refilled when the bowl is empty.

The Popularity of Water Elements in Japanese Gardens

No Japanese garden is finished without a water feature. Since Japanese water fountains are seen as emblematic of physical and spiritual cleansing, they are often positioned in the doorway of buildings or shrines. It is uncommon to see extravagantly-designed Japanese fountains since the focus is supposed to be on the water itself.

You will also find many fountains that have spouts made of bamboo.

The water flows through the bamboo spout and collects in the stone basin underneath. In addition, it is important to the overall look that it appear as if it has been outdoors for a long time. Natural elements such as plants and rocks are commonly put in place around a fountain so that it seems more connected with nature. To the owner of the fountain, it obviously is more than just nice decoration.

If you want to get a bit more creative, try a stone fountain enhanced with live bamboo and other natural elements placed on a bed of gravel. The idea is that over time it will start to look more and more like a natural part of the area, as moss slowly grows over the stones.

If you are fortunate enough to have a big section of open land you can create a water feature that is much more elaborate. Nice add-ons include a babbling stream or tiny pool with koi in it.

There are different alternatives if you do not want to put water in your Japanese fountain. Pretty rocks, sand, or gravel are good alternatives to actual water, as they can be used to represent the water. You can also assemble flat stones and place them close enough together that they look like water in motion.

The Distribution of Garden Water Fountains Engineering Knowledge in Europe

Throughout the European countries, the chief means of dissiminating useful hydraulic information and fountain design suggestions were the circulated papers and illustrated publications of the day, which added to the advancement of scientific innovation. An un-named French water feature engineer was an internationally famed hydraulic leader in the later part of the 1500's. With imperial mandates in Brussels, London and Germany, he began his work in Italy, acquiring experience in garden design and grottoes with incorporated and ingenious water hydraulics. The text, “The Principles of Moving Forces,” authored towards the end of his life in France, turned out to be the definitive text on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. Detailing modern hydraulic technologies, the book also modified key hydraulic breakthroughs of classical antiquity. Archimedes, the creator of the water screw, had his work highlighted and these included a mechanical way to move water. Two concealed vessels warmed by the sun's rays in an room adjacent to the creative fountain were presented in an illustration. What occurs is the heated water expanded, rises and closes up the pipes heading to the fountain, thereby leading to activation. Garden ponds as well as pumps, water wheels, and water feature creations are incorporated in the book.

Water Features: Great for Your Pets

Outdoor water features and bird feeders are a healthy way to draw in wildlife and pets. Birds must have water to drink, bathe in, as well a place to groom, or preen. There are some birds, like robins, thrushes, orioles, or warblers, which are not attracted to bird feeders, but are interested in fountains because of the moving water. Many birds prefer moving water versus standing water, making an outdoor fountain even more appealing than a bowl-shaped bird bath. Trickling fountains which spatter water have a more detectable sound, this attracting even more birds.

Dogs are attracted to fountains mainly because they provide drinking water. During the sweltering summer months, dogs and cats will be outside searching for fresh water. Constantly flowing water is also going to require much less cleaning than a still bowl of water from a birdbath, which collects debris.
