Chatsworth Gardens: The Revelation Garden Fountain

Designed by celebrated English sculptor Angela Conner, Revelation is the most recent addition to the Chatsworth decorative garden water fountains. The now deceased 11th Duke of Devonshire commissioned her, due to her work in brass and steel, to make a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth in celebration of the Queen’s 80th birthday. One of Chatsworth’s first ponds, Jack Pond, had “Revelation” placed in it in 1999. It takes on the shape of four large flower petals designed from metal which opens and closes with the water flow, alternately concealing and displaying a gold colored globe at the sculpture’s heart. The sculpture’s proportions are five meters high by five meters wide and features a steel globe finished with gold dust. a_530__27238.jpg This newest fountain is an exciting and interesting addition to the Gardens of Chatsworth, unique in that the motion of the flower petals is entirely driven by water.

Keep Your Large Outdoor Fountain Clean

Proper care and regular cleaning are important to the longevity of water fountains. It is important to clean it out and remove any debris or foreign objects that might have gotten into or onto it. Another factor is that water that is exposed to sunlight is susceptible to growing algae. Stir hydrogen peroxide, sea salt, or vinegar into the water to avoid this particular problem. Bleach can also be put into the water, but this is not an ideal option because it can hurt birds or other animals.

Every three-four months, garden fountains should go through a serious cleaning. First off you must remove the water. Then use mild soap and a soft sponge to clean inside the reservoir. A good tip is to use a toothbrush if there are small hard-to-reach spots. Any soap residue remaining on your fountain can harm it, so be sure it is all rinsed off.

Various organisms and calcium deposits may get inside the pump, so it is best to take it apart and clean it thoroughly. Soaking it in vinegar for a while will make it easier to wash. If you want to eliminate build-up in your fountain, use rain water or mineral water versus tap water, as these don’t contain any ingredients that might stick to the inside of the pump.

Finally, be sure to have a quick look at your fountain every day and add water if you see that the level is depleted. If the water level slides below the pump’s intake level, it can harm the pump and cause it to burn out - something you don't want to happen!

What is a Splash Fountain?

People are captivated by splashing fountains, otherwise known as bathing fountains, because they are the ideal place to cool off on hot summer days. As a result, they are often called as interactive fountains. These fountains are especially created to allow for easy access - and include nonslip surfaces, have no standing water to prevent possible drowning, thus eliminating the need for lifeguards or supervision. These splash areas, or “spraygrounds”, are usually seen in community pools, public parks or public playgrounds. Splash fountains like the one found in Dundas Square in Toronto, Canada, soak up the solar power from the specially made dark granite slabs. This remarkable fountain boasts 30 groups of 3 rows of 10 spigots for a total of 600 ground nozzles. Bundles of thirty nozzles are found directly beneath a stainless-steel grille. In the principal walkway through Dundas Square you will see the 20 grilles made up of 2 rows of 10.

Enhance Your Life with a Fountain

Having a fountain around can optimize your daily life as the soothing sound of the water provides a sense of tranquility, and the movement of the water serves to clean and moisten the air.

You might not even be aware of the extent to which a water fountain, whether inside or outside, will enhance your life. It is most likely no coincidence that the human body is made up mostly of water, and that people are drawn to coastal cities. While there are many luxurious ways to integrate the benefits of water into your daily life (like investing in a beach house!), a much more accessible solution is to put a water feature in your home.

Your patio, porch, or back yard can be improved by setting up an outdoor garden fountain. Even if you are already pleased with your outdoor area, the introduction of one of the many outdoor fountains available will make you adore it even more. It can be mounted on the outside wall of your house above the patio, or even on the interior wall of a screened porch. If you have a flower bed, think about installing a beautiful tiered model there to add a sense of harmony.
