Gardens of Chatworth: The "Revelation" Water Fountain

“Revelation,” the most recent addition to the beautiful garden fountains of Chatsworth, was designed by recognized British sculptor Angela Conner. The now deceased 11th Duke of Devonshire mandated her, because of her work in brass and steel, to design a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth in commemoration of the Queen’s 80th birthday bash. “Revelation” was installed in 1999 in Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s most seasoned ponds. 8410-2104__14101.jpg It takes the form of four large petals crafted of steel which open and closes with the water flow, alternately concealing and exposing a golden globe at the sculpture’s heart. A gold dust decorated steel globe was made and incorporated into the prominent sculpture standing five meters in height and five meters in width. This newest fountain is an intriguing addition to the Gardens at Chatsworth because the petals’ motion is completely driven by water.

The Roman Wall Fountains of Michelangelo

Michelangelo and Ammannati, two celebrated Florentine artists, created the first Roman wall fountains during the 16th century. The fountain in the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, which was completed in 1536 and became part of the façade of the Palazzo Senatorio, was Michelangelo’s first design. Some years later, a more extravagant water show was made viable with the extension of the Aqua Felice into the Capitol. Expecting this, Michelangelo had added a more sizable basin styled on the late Cinquecento.

The question remains as to whether the famed sculptor was the earliest to create wall fountains. The fountain styles seen in Italy definitely show the influence of his designs. Today, this structural look is found at the Fountain of the River Gods at the Villa Lante, Bagnaia 1, and the Fountain of the Mugnone arranged among the stairs on the principal axis of the Villa Pratolino.

It seemed to be Michelangelo’s predestination to combine classic Roman attributes into his fountains instead of using his own remarkable talents to design original pieces. Julius III (1550-1555) decided to have a fountain constructed at the top of the Belvedere in the Vatican and instructed the Florentine artist to design a one-of-a-kind wall fountain. The talented artist was commissioned to design a marble figure of Moses striking a stone from which water flowed. Rather than creating the Moses statue, which would take too much time to complete, an antique figure of Cleopatra was used in its place, however. A design by the well-known artist was thought to be too time-consuming, therefore, an ancient sculpture placed above the fountain seemed to be a better option.

The Interesting Beginnings of the Wall Water Fountain

The Roman scholar Pope Nicholas V (1397-1455) decided to have hundreds of historic Greek texts translated into Latin. Continuing to improve the city's standing, he ordered the reconstruction of the damaged Acqua Vergine aqueduct in the year 1453. This aqueduct soon began delivering fresh drinking water to the city from 13 km away. He also decided to revive the Roman tradition of marking the terminal point of an aqueduct with a "mostra", a grand commemorative fountain. Pope Nicholas V commissioned designer Leon Battista Alberti to construct a simple wall fountain where the Trevi Fountain is now situated. Pope Nicholas V's commitment to making Rome the center of the Christian community, and provide a source of quality drinking water to her residents led to the concept of the wall fountain.
