The First Garden Fountains

su2063_2__54296.jpg Villages and villages relied on working water fountains to channel water for cooking, washing, and cleaning up from local sources like lakes, channels, or creeks. Gravity was the power source of water fountains up until the conclusion of the 19th century, using the forceful power of water traveling downhill from a spring or brook to push the water through valves or other outlets. The elegance and wonder of fountains make them perfect for traditional monuments. If you saw the first fountains, you wouldn't recognize them as fountains. Crafted for drinking water and ceremonial reasons, the first fountains were simple carved stone basins. Stone basins as fountains have been found from 2000 B.C.. Gravity was the power source that controlled the oldest water fountains. Drinking water was provided by public fountains, long before fountains became decorative public monuments, as beautiful as they are practical. Fountains with ornamental Gods, mythological beasts, and creatures began to show up in Rome in about 6 BC, built from stone and bronze. The extraordinary aqueducts of Rome supplied water to the spectacular public fountains, most of which you can go see today.

The Defining Characteristics of Classic Greek Statuary

Archaic Greeks were renowned for providing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Youthful, appealing male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the statues, or kouros figures. The kouroi, viewed by the Greeks to exemplify beauty, had one foot extended out of a rigid forward-facing posture and the male figurines were regularly nude, with a compelling, powerful build. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. Throughout the Archaic time, a great time of changes, the Greeks were evolving new forms of government, expressions of art, and a deeper awareness of people and cultures outside Greece.

Throughout this time and other periods of historical tumult, encounters often happened, including battles fought between city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.

Musical Fountains and Their Amazing Tones

Musical fountains, often referred to as dancing fountains, are animated, aestheticallypleasing fountains used for entertainment. Using timed sound waves and illumination, as well as lasers, against water particles produces this effect. When the water refracts and reflects the light, it produces stunning three-dimensional images.

The monetary cost of large scale installations, which utilize hundreds of water jets and lights, runs into the millions of dollars. The mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical elements required to construct a complex musical feature may be just as spectacular as the show itself.

The musical fountain project in Dubai is considered the largest in the world. WET Design of California, who was responsible for designing the water feature of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, created it on the 30-acre man-made Burj Khalifa Lake. This fountain requires an incredible 6,600 lights, 25 colored projectors, fog and fire. Incredibly, it measures 207-meters (902 feet) and jets water 150 meters (490 feet) high - this is comparable to a 50-story building- and plays an array of music including classical to modern Arabic and world music. The total cost was exceptional - an estimated 218 million dollars. The Dubai Mall and the water fountain were formally opened on May 8, 2009 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Located in front of the Burj Khalifa, this fountain is best seen from the Souk Al Bahar or the Dubai Mall.

Layout Options for Garden Fountains

A garden can be a small sanctuary, providing you a serene place to stop and enjoy some outdoor time. Even though there is a lot of work involved in getting a new one designed and built, it is worth the effort for anyone who will be using it. The value of your home will go up with a lovely garden area, as it will boost the “curb appeal” of the property. Many people choose to add to their landscaping by putting in statues or other art, re-doing the pavement of their driveway, planting trees, or adding a water feature.

A water fountain can make a considerable difference to the elegance and tranquility of your garden. A true fantasyland can be created from what used to be a very ordinary spot. The trickling water of your fountain will not only give you a calming retreat, it will also attract wild birds and other friendly local creatures. The rest of the garden will instantly become just background to the lovely new fountain.

The Myriad Ways you Can Benefit from Water Fountains

Not only do outdoor fountains add beauty to any environment, they also provide pleasing sounds and cleaner air. Not only do they add elegance to your home decor, they also provide a fantastic place to gather with family and friends, and offer a number of health benefits. Different people, however, notice that their fountain is special to them for many personal reasons. Perhaps it takes you back to a special place you once visited. You might remember someone special when you look at it. You could choose to make it into a memorial to a loved one. You will no doubt enjoy its benefits and elegance for a long time.

Garden Water Features: Lovely Commemorative Pieces

To pay tribute to the memory of someone who has died, consider creating a garden fountain. Traditions that were once prevalent are often eschewed these days. Yet most cultures even nowadays build memorials to honor their dead. Personal things from the dead person’s life often play an important part in a commemorative piece. They come in many shapes and sizes, and backyard garden fountains are very popular. Including photos, planting a tree or flowers, attaching a custom made plaque, or gathering at the fountain to pay tribute are ways you can make it more personal.

People you have lost can be memorialized in a beautiful loving manner with garden fountains. The tricking of water through the fountain symbolizes the luck and affluence of your loved one and can also be part of the celebration of their life. In order to last a long time, your garden fountain should be well made, strong, and resistant to changing weather. You will want to be certain that your memorial will survive many years once in place.

Water Fountains: Great for Wildlife

Putting in an outdoor water fountain or a bird feeder will allow you to enjoy the natural presence of wildlife or pets. All birds need a place to drink, bathe and preen. Birds including robins, thrushes, orioles, or warblers prefer the motion of water from a fountain and are not necessarily drawn to bird feeders. Many flying creatures enjoy running water rather than of still water, thus making such outdoor features much more appealing than bowl shaped birdbaths. Trickling fountains which spatter water have a more detectable sound, this attracting even more birds.

As dog owners will agree these outdoor fountains are a great water source for the four-legged creatures. Dogs and cats will be outdoors looking out for clean water during hot temperatures. Fountains generally require little cleaning due to their constantly flowing water, whereas birdbaths need to be regularly serviced because they easily collect debris.
