The Influence of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Landscaping

a-423__44102.jpg The introduction of the Normans in the later half of the 11th century substantially altered The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. However, there was no time for home life, domestic architecture, and adornment until the Normans had conquered the whole realm. Monasteries and castles served separate purposes, so while monasteries were large stone structures assembled in only the most productive, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the people focused on understanding offensive and defensive tactics. The bare fortresses did not provide for the peaceful avocation of gardening. Berkeley Castle is probably the most intact model in existence today of the early Anglo-Norman form of architecture. The keep is reported to have been conceived during the time of William the Conqueror. A massive terrace serves as a hindrance to invaders who would attempt to mine the walls of the building. On one of these terraces sits a charming bowling green: it's coated in grass and flanked by an old yew hedge that is formed into the shape of rough ramparts.

A Chronicle of Garden Water Fountains

Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek texts into Latin. In order to make Rome deserving of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope resolved to embellish the beauty of the city. At the behest of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a damaged aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was renovated starting in 1453. Building a mostra, a grandiose celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. At the bidding of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Modifications and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

The Many Styles of Water Wall Fountains

Small verandas or courtyards are an ideal place to install wall fountains since they add style to an area with limited space. When looking at the many types of outdoor wall fountains available including traditional, vintage, modern, or Asian, you are certain to find one best suited to your design ideas. While there are innumerable prefabricated ones on the market, you may need a custom-built fountain if none of these are pleasing to you.

There are two specific styles of fountains you can buy: mounted and free-standing. Small, self-contained mounted wall fountains can be installed on any surface. Fountains of this kind need to be light, therefore, they are usually made of resin (resembling stone) or fiberglass. Floor fountains are freestanding, sizable, and also have a basin on the floor as well as a flat side against the wall. Typically composed of cast stone, this kind of water feature is not restricted in weight.

Custom-built fountains which can be incorporated into a new or existing wall are often prescribed by landscaping designers. The basin and all the necessary plumbing are best installed by a trained mason. A fountain mask or a spout also needs to be integrated into the wall. A custom-built wall fountain blends into the landscape instead of standing out because it was a later addition, which contributes to a cohesive look.

Putting a Wall Water Element in Your House

Any space will benefit from the inclusion of a wall fountain. The calming sound of the waterfall will de-stress and sooth. People tend to hang their wall fountains in entryways, but, in fact, they can be a wonderful addition to any room where everyone gathers. Although the instructions for hanging one are fairly straightforward there will be small modifications depending on the model. Assembly will include putting together various components. It will be necessary to connect the pump and tubing, and the base will need to be connected to the top section. The directions should be read first to make sure it is set up right. It is usually a straight-forward procedure. Keep in mind, though, that each model might require a slight change. The easiest way to make sure it is positioned correctly is to get somebody to hold it where you want it while you mark the wall. To make sure it will be straight, use a level. Put your markings at both the top and the bottom. Wall fountains can be mounted in more than just one way. You can place the screws in the wall and glide them into the slots on the back of the wall fountain. Alternatively, brackets can be fixed to the wall. The bracket option is better, especially for wall fountains that are big and heavy. Mark the spot on the wall where the brackets need to be attached. Drill pilot holes in the wall where you need to position the drywall anchors. Insert the anchors by attentively hammering them into the wall. Use a cordless drill or a screwdriver to mount the brackets, making certain they are straight. Hang your wall fountain by fastening it onto the brackets. Make sure that it is properly straight and not loose. Add some water once the wall fountain is ready. There must be sufficient water to cover the water pump. Then plug it in and the water will start to circulate. Very carefully put in just enough water to reach one inch below the top edge of the basin. The basin will overflow when the pump is shut off if it is too full, so be careful not to fill it completely. The water level will rise because all of the circulating water will settle down at the bottom part of the basin. The water will overflow and cause property damage if the wall fountain is overly full.

Tips for the Selecting the Perfect Water Feature for You

When you are deciding on a water fountain, be sure to give some thought to where you will install it. The entryway to a hotel or building is an ideal spot for them, as they offer a lovely welcome to guests.

There are models such as wall fountains made especially to be hung against a flat surface. They can be mounted against a wall, post, or fence by using a bar or a hook affixed to the back. Since the top part of your fountain is not stable on its own, ensure that it is secure against a wall to avoid damage caused by strong winds, wild animals, or other natural hazards.

A typical place to add a garden sculpture is commonly in areas where people come together to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Think about the ideal place to put your water feature if you do not want birds to use it as a bathing pond. If you intend to purposely entice birds, however, installing a birdbath is an ideal solution. Wall water fountains are excellent for indoor use as well if you want to avoid these issues. Dentists’ and doctors’ practices as well as stately homes are just a few of the areas where you can find these kinds of fountains.
