Original Water Delivery Techniques in Rome

Rome’s very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, residents living at higher elevations had to depend on natural springs for their water. Throughout this time period, there were only 2 other innovations capable of providing water to higher areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. p_586__49363.jpg In the very early sixteenth century, the city began to make use of the water that ran below ground through Acqua Vergine to deliver drinking water to Pincian Hill. The aqueduct’s channel was made reachable by pozzi, or manholes, that were positioned along its length when it was initially constructed. The manholes made it less demanding to thoroughly clean the channel, but it was also achievable to use buckets to pull water from the aqueduct, as we witnessed with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he operated the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he died. Reportedly, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t adequate to satisfy his needs. Thankfully, the aqueduct sat below his residence, and he had a shaft established to give him accessibility.

Water Features: Great for Wildlife

Anyone who has bird feeders knows that outdoor water features bring in wildlife. Birds need to have water to drink, bathe in, as well a place to groom, or preen. Birds such as robins, thrushes, orioles, or warblers are usually attracted to the active water of fountains. Birds are often drawn to outdoor fountains because of their flowing water rather than the standing water found in bowl-shaped bird baths. Trickling fountains that splash around are audible from far away, attracting even more birds.

Dogs are attracted to fountains mainly because they provide drinking water. Dogs and cats will be outside looking out for refreshing water during hot temperatures. Constantly flowing water is also going to require much less cleaning than a still bowl of water from a birdbath, which collects debris.

Roman Wall Fountains: Michelangelo’s Masterwork

During the 16th century two famous Florentine artists by the names of Michelangelo and Ammannati built the first wall fountains in Rome. In 1536 Michelangelo’s first fountain in the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, part of the façade of the Palazzo Senatorio, was unveiled. Constructed some years later, a conduit from the Aqua Felice was added which carried water into the Capitol allowing a greater water display. Michelangelo, however, had anticipated this which led to use of a larger basin styled on the forms of the late Cinquecento.

The question remains as to whether the famed maestro was the earliest to design wall fountains. The fountain types seen in Italy certainly show the influence of his designs. Today, this structural design is found at the Fountain of the River Gods at the Villa Lante, Bagnaia 1, and the Fountain of the Mugnone arranged among the stairs on the main axis of the Villa Pratolino.

Regrettably, Michelangelo was destined to put his own brilliance aside and combine conventional elements into fountains based on Roman styles.

Julius III (1550-1555) decided to have a fountain built at the top of the Belvedere in the Vatican and commissioned the Florentine genius to design a one-of-a-kind wall fountain. The fountain was to be decorated with a marble depiction of Moses hitting a stone from which water flowed. The idea of the Moses figure was rejected, however, because of the time it would take to build it and was therefore replaced by an antique image of Cleopatra. A design by the well-known artist was thought to be too time-consuming, therefore, an ancient depiction placed above the fountain seemed to be a better alternative.

Animals and Outdoor Garden Fountains

Be certain to take your pet into consideration when you are planning on installing a water feature. Your stand-alone fountain may be taken for a big pool or a drinking pond by your dog. Your pets will not be negatively influenced if you add a wall fountain to your yard. You may need to think about where you will locate the fountain as birds may take it as a bathing pond. Add a birdbath if your goal is to draw birds to your garden. The indoor use of wall water fountains is entirely possible if wish to avoid these problems. It is common to see these types of fountains in dental or medical practices as well as in glamorous homes.

Garden Fountains As Water Elements

The definition of a water feature is a large component which has water flowing in or through it. The range of goods available run the gamut from uncomplicated suspended wall fountains to intricate courtyard tiered fountains. These products are so versatile that they can be located outdoors or indoors. Ponds and pools are also considered water features.

An outdoor wall fountain can be a useful water feature to include in any yard, yoga studio, patio, balcony, or workplace. You can relax to the gently flowing water in your fountain and enchant your senses of sight and sound. Their aesthetically attractive shape embellishes the decor of any room. You can also have fun watching the striking water display, experience the serenity, and reduce any unwanted noises with the soothing sounds of water.

The Source of Modern Day Garden Fountains

The translation of hundreds of ancient Greek texts into Latin was commissioned by the scholarly Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 till 1455. Beautifying Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the heart of his ambitions. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The ancient Roman tradition of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the spot where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually enabled it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

Creating the Best Sanctuary Indoors or Outside

Incorporating a feng shui fountain in your living area will most surely contribute to creating an atmosphere of harmony and serenity. Putting in a garden or home waterfall is an easy way to make this happen. The ideal addition to your decor is this type of feature. Set up your outdoor fountain where you can see it from inside the house as well.

Make sure to include some attractive flowers and plants, as they complement any water fountain. Plants and flowers that blossom in various seasons make the ideal accompaniment. The area will be further enhanced with small touches like art, a fire pit, or attractive stones.
