The Effect of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Gardens

The arrival of the Normans in the latter half of the eleventh century significantly altered The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. The ability of the Normans exceeded the Anglo-Saxons' in design and farming at the time of the conquest. wwlhs_bl_3__21899.jpg But before concentrating on home-life or having the occasion to consider domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire society. Most often designed upon windy summits, castles were basic structures that permitted their occupants to devote time and space to offensive and defensive programs, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings frequently installed in only the most fecund, extensive valleys. Peaceful activities such as gardening were out of place in these destitute citadels. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is portrayed in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most unscathed sample we have. It is said that the keep was introduced during William the Conqueror's time. As a method of deterring assailants from tunneling beneath the walls, an immense terrace encircles the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an ancient yew hedge cut into the form of crude battlements.

Feline Water Features

Does hearing water flow from the spigot make your cat come running? Do you find him guzzling toilet water or hesitating before drinking water from his own dish? Cats do not like to have water that is not moving, and this behavior shows this. In most situations, they will not seek out much water to drink.

Undomesticated cats get sufficient moisture from the meat they eat. For this reason, an instinctive need for water never developed in felines. Nevertheless, cats which do not hunt in the wild need proper hydration, so you need to be sure they have an adequate amount. With a cat fountain, you can be sure your cat has enough water available.

Having one will ensure your cat has enough water available anytime it wants to drink. The range of different styles will allow you to choose a fountain best suited to your cat. Fountains can have continually moving water for freshness, or a bowl that fills up as your cat empties it.

Attributes of Garden Sculpture in Archaic Greece

Up right up until the Archaic Greeks developed the first freestanding sculpture, a noteworthy achievement, carvings had mainly been completed in walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were crafted to look stiff and always had foot in front; the males were vigorous, sturdy, and nude. In about 650 BC, the varieties of the kouroi became life-sized. A substantial period of modification for the Greeks, the Archaic period brought about more forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater comprehension of people and customs outside of Greece. During this time and other periods of historic tumult, encounters often took place, including wars fought amongst city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan infiltration of Samos.

Musical Fountains and Their Amazing Sounds

The multidimensional images produced by musical fountains, or dancing fountains, is a kind of animated, attractively designed fountain used for entertainment reasons. Using timed sound waves and illumination, as well as lasers, against water particles produces this image. When the water refracts and reflects the light, it creates stunning three-dimensional images.

To create such an installation, hundreds of lights and water jets are required, and can cost millions of dollars. The mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical elements needed to construct a complex musical feature may be just as stunning as the show itself.

The jaw-dropping musical fountain in Dubai is without a doubt the greatest such project globally. Created by California based WET Design, which also developed the celebrated Las Vegas fountain at the Bellagio Hotel, it spans the 30-acre man-made Burj Khalifa Lake. This fountain requires an incredible 6,600 lights, 25 colored projectors, fog and fire. With a range of music from classical, to contemporary Arabic and world music, it spans 207-meters and projects water up to 150 meters (490 feet) - equal to a 50-story building) - into the air.

The total cost was exceptional - an estimated 218 million dollars. The fountain along with the Dubai Mall were both officially opened on May 8, 2009 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. One has the best glimpse of the fountain, located in front of the Burj Khalifa, from the Souk Al Bahar or the Dubai Mall.

You might not even be aware of the degree to which a water fountain, whether inside or outside, will complement your life. It is most likely no coincidence that the human body is composed mainly of water, and that people are drawn to coastal cities. Chatsworth Gardens and the "Revelation" Water Fountain

“Revelation,” the latest addition to the decorative garden fountains of Chatsworth, was created by well-known British sculptor Angela Conner. She was mandated by the now deceased 11th Duke of Devonshire to create a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth, in 2004/5 in commemoration of the Queen’s 80th birthday celebration. Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s oldest ponds, had “Revelation” installed in 1999. It takes the configuration of four big petals designed from metal which opens and close with the water movement, alternatively hiding and revealing a golden globe at the sculpture’s heart. A gold dust colored steel globe was made and included into the large sculpture standing five meters high and five meters wide. The flower petals move depending on the circulation of water, making this installation an exciting addition to the Gardens of Chatsworth.
