Characteristics of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece

Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were designed to look stiff and typically had foot in front; the males were healthy, strong, and nude. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. During the Archaic period, a great time of change, the Greeks were developing new forms of government, expressions of art, and a better awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. But in spite of the issues, the Greek civilization continued to progress, unabated.

The Newest Addition to the Chatsworth Gardens: Revelation

Created by celebrated British sculptor Angela Conner, Revelation is the latest addition to the Chatsworth ornamental outdoor water features. In commemoration of the Queen’s 80th birthday celebration, she was commissioned by the late 11th Duke of Devonshire to create a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth made of brass and steel in 2004. Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s most venerable ponds, had “Revelation” installed in 1999. The four large metallic flower petals close and open with the flow of water, alternately camouflaging and revealing a golden globe at the sculpture’s heart.

Standing five meters high and five meters wide, the globe was crafted from metal and then painted with gold dust. This most recent water fountain is an exciting and innovative addition to the Chatsworth Gardens, unique in that the movement of the petals is entirely powered by water.

Pets and Wildlife Enjoy Water Fountains

Wildlife and pets are by nature drawn to bird feeders and water fountains. Birds need to have water to drink, bathe in, as well a place to groom, or preen. There are some birds, like robins, thrushes, orioles, or warblers, which are not attracted to bird feeders, but are drawn to fountains because of the moving water. While bowl-shaped bird baths can be uninteresting to many birds, fountains are more inviting because of the moving water they generate. Trickling fountains which spatter water have a more noticeable sound, this attracting even more birds.

Dogs love fountains as they provide another place to drink fresh water. Hot days drive dogs and cats to anxiously look for the freshest water nearby. Constantly flowing water is also going to require much less cleaning than a still bowl of water from a birdbath, which collects debris.

Cat-Friendly Fountains

Does your cat like to hop onto the countertop when he hears the tap? Does he reach into the toilet or feel the water in his bowl before putting his face in it? Although these actions might seem strange, in fact they are common because cats shy away from water that is not moving. They are not compelled to drink water much at all.

Out in nature, cats ingest meat full of moisture which keeps them sufficiently hydrated. For this reason, an intuitive need for water never developed in felines. That said, household cats do in fact need additional water, so it is up to you to supply it. To maintain a good water supply for your pet, get it a cat fountain.

If you get one, you can rest easy knowing your cat has easy access to water. There are many different styles of fountains so you can get one that your cat really likes. Fountains can have continuously flowing water for freshness, or a bowl that fills up as your cat empties it.
