Statuary As a Staple of Vintage Art in Historic Greece

Up until the Archaic Greeks created the first freestanding statuary, a remarkable achievement, carvings had mostly been done in walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. Thought of by Greeks to characterize splendour, the kouroi were shaped into stiff, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, well-built, and athletic. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. Throughout the Archaic time, a big time of changes, the Greeks were developing new forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater comprehension of people and cultures outside Greece. 94-134-13901__80113.jpg During this time and other periods of historical tumult, clashes often occurred, among them battles fought between city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.

Short History of Fountains

If you study any town or city throughout history, they have all constructed outdoor water features, which provided water for the citizens and often became part of the neighborhood lore. Fountains delivered necessary drinking water in the times when people did not yet have accessibility to fresh water in their homes. These beautifully designed fountains are also a spot to pray, make wishes, or just to take pleasure in the sight and sound of the flowing water. Water fountains have other religious uses, such as purifying worshipers during rituals, as well as militaristic functions, such as assisting the town to stand up to blockades. These water fountains are also a setting for townspeople to socialize, like at the fountain at Castalia in Delphi.

Chatsworth Gardens: The "Revelation" Fountain

Angela Conner, the famous British sculptor, designed “Revelation,” the most recent acquisition to the ornamental exterior fountains of Chatsworth. The now deceased 11th Duke of Devonshire commissioned her, because of her work in brass and steel, to make a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth in celebration of the Queen’s 80th birthday. Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s oldest ponds, had “Revelation” installed in 1999. Taking the form of four big flower petals which open and close with the flow of water, the metal fountain alternately hides and reveals a gold colored globe at the center of the sculpture. The sculpture’s dimensions are five meters in height by five meters wide and incorporates a metallic globe finished with gold dust. The petals move depending on the movement of water, making this installation an intriguing addition to the Chatsworth Garden grounds.

The Life -Altering Benefits of Water Fountains

From improving air quality to adding a feeling of tranquility to the area, a fountain adds so much to your life.

There are many positive aspects to having an interior or exterior water fountain which you may not even understand. It is most likely no coincidence that the human body is composed primarily of water, and that people are attracted to coastal cities. While you could invest in an overpriced beach house or plunge into the ocean every day to enjoy the benefits of water, getting a water feature is much easier and less costly!

Enhance any outdoor area by adding a pretty outdoor garden fountain. Outdoor water elements can further improve even the most beautiful space. A wonderful idea is to put one on the wall of your screened porch, or perhaps outside as part of your outdoor decor. Your flower garden will become a place of elegant decadence and serenity if you put in a tiered type. Birds love birdbath fountains because the flowing of the water ensures that it stays clean and does not accumulate bacteria and algae. Add the final touch with the tranquil sound of running water in your garden.

Rome’s First Water Transport Systems

With the building of the first elevated aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, individuals who lived on the city’s foothills no longer had to rely strictly on naturally-occurring spring water for their needs. When aqueducts or springs weren’t easily accessible, people dwelling at raised elevations turned to water drawn from underground or rainwater, which was made available by wells and cisterns. To supply water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they applied the emerging approach of redirecting the movement from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Even though they were primarily designed to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi began using the manholes to get water from the channel, commencing when he bought the property in 1543.

It appears that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t good enough to meet his needs. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran below his property.
