Things to Consider When Choosing a Water Fountain

win732__78528.jpg It is vital to think about how a water fountain will fit into your garden before buying one. They make beautiful centerpieces in roundabouts and make a nice impression in driveways and entryways too.

There are models such as wall fountains designed especially to be hung against a flat surface. They can be secured against a wall, post, or fence by using a bar or a hook fastened to the back. Since the top part of your fountain is not stable on its own, make certain that it is secure against a wall to avoid damage caused by strong winds, wild animals, or other natural threats.

In open-air places like parks where folks tend to sit and relax for a few minutes, you will notice one other option – the garden sculpture style.

When and Where Did Water Fountains Originate?

Hundreds of classic Greek records were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. In order to make Rome worthy of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to embellish the beauty of the city. At the behest of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a damaged aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was reconditioned starting in 1453. The ancient Roman tradition of marking the arrival point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was previously occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and constructed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. Modifications and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

The Famous Revelation Water Fountain at Chatsworth Gardens

“Revelation,” the most recent inclusion to the beautiful outdoor fountains of Chatsworth, was planned by well-known British sculptor Angela Conner. In 2004/2005 she was commissioned by the now deceased 11th Duke of Devonshire to produce a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth, in brass and steel, for the Queen’s 80th birthday celebration. “Revelation” was put up in 1999 in Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s first ponds. Taking on the form of four large flower petals which open and close with the circulation of water, the steel fountain alternately hides and reveals a golden globe at the heart of the sculpture. The sculpture’s dimensions are five meters high by five meters in width and features a steel globe painted with gold dust. This newest water feature is an interesting and unique improvement to the Gardens of Chatsworth, because the motion of flower petals is completely driven by water.

The Cascade Water Fountain at Garden of Chatsworth

The Cascade garden fountain forms an incredible garden centerpiece at the back of Chatsworth House. Twenty-four irregularly positioned stone steps in a series stretch 200 yards in the direction of the residence and down the hillside. The Cascade is founded on a 17th century French style and is completely gravity fed too. In 1696, this water fountain was created for the first Duke of Devonshire and has remained the same ever since that time. Positioned at the top of the fountain is the Cascade House, from which water runs downward. The dwelling, decorated on the outside with underwater creatures in bas-relief, is a small-scale building. Water pressure to the Cascade can be enhanced on important occasions, meaning the Cascade House becomes part of the Cascade pageant, as liquid spills through conduits on its roof and from the jaws of its carved ocean creatures, just before continuing straight down the Cascade. The sound of the water cascading changes as it goes down the Cascades, providing a great and comforting complement to a saunter through the gardens and formed by the small variation of every step. This cascade was chosen in a survey, carried out by Country Life in 2004, as the UK'sbest water fountain.
